Over the last 6 or so years the Yeah Yeah Yeahs have not so secretly been putting out excellent albums of raw, energetic, punk-influenced indie rock. Now they’ve decided to throw us a bit of a curve ball with their latest album, bringing in the dance rhythms and synth textures – and frankly, it’s about time. It’s as if they finally realized that if you wanna get a crowd of jaded hipsters worked up fast, dropping in a throbbing synth line and banging backbeat is the best bet.

In most situations i’d say this sort of move could be considered a cheap attempt to grab attention but It’s Blitz still retains the YYY’s signature sound while skillfully grafting newer (if albeit knowingly retro) elements to their lean, angular sound. It’s Blitz shows that the YYY’s are more than a one trick pony and that Karen O’s a front women with enough energy and swagger to be able to survive a contextual shift; gone are the wildly explosive guitar excursions, in are more concidered and synthetic textures. Lyrically and thematically this is one of their more vulnerable albums and while Show Your Bones contained bleak moments of vulnerability it still delivered them with an angsty snarl. It’s Blitz would rather get you out of your seat to revel in them.
