Did Coldplay rip-off Joe Satriani?
December 7th, 2008
Sure they overlap nicely – and while i’m not a music major, it seems to my ears that both songs use a very common chord progression. Which then begs two more questions – Why would anyone want to rip-off Joe Satriani (guitar players, put your hands down.) and then the follow-up: Which of these artists do i care less about? via techdirt

Congrats Tanner on getting me to listen to both Coldplay and Joe Satriani. The power of YouTube…
While they are undeniable similar, that riff is about as generic as they get; I’m sure you could find fifty songs that sound similar to it.

that was pretty much my thoughts on the matter – i don’t have alot of music theory to back this up, but i’m pretty sure it’s one of those 1,3,7 1,4,5 progressions that’s everywhere in rock n roll.
Anyone with actual theory knowledge care to chime in?

Kinda like a 1,6,5 or something. Either way, latest word is that Satriani will probably win this battle in court. Judging by those corny glasses, he could probably use another buck or two!

i hear he’s suing them for a six pack of Genny cream ale a Hawaiian shirt, membership renewal to the hair club, and bus fare back to Whogivesafuck.

But c’mon, where would any of us be without the delicate stylings of “Summer Song?”

My theory is that what’shisface from Coldplay heard the song on an elevator or in a waiting room somewhere, and the catchy little ditty just stuck in his head without him realizing it…
